As Chair of the Great River Rail Commission, I’m deeply passionate about expanding and improving passenger rail travel in the Midwest. Our commission—comprised of local and regional leaders from St. Paul to La Crosse—is a leading advocate for developing rail service along the Mississippi River corridor, connecting the Twin Cities with Milwaukee and Chicago. Together, we champion convenient, safe, and efficient rail options that offer a better way to travel.

Celebrating the Launch and Success of Borealis

A major milestone in our long-term vision came to life in May 2024 with the launch of the Borealis train, the second daily roundtrip passenger rail service between Minneapolis–St. Paul and Chicago. This new route complements the existing Amtrak Empire Builder, providing travelers with more flexibility and greater connectivity across the region

Since its launch, Borealis has exceeded all ridership projections, proving the growing demand for modern, reliable passenger rail. By October 2024, we celebrated serving our 100,000th passenger. Fast forward to April 2025, and the number has more than doubled to 212,515 riders—a stunning achievement compared to the 155,500 annual ridership projected in Amtrak’s original 2015 feasibility study.

Why More People Are Choosing Passenger Rail

Travelers are choosing trains like Borealis for a simple reason: the passenger rail experience is better. Trains are:

  • Comfortable: Spacious seating, generous legroom, and room to relax.

  • Affordable: Competitive pricing with fewer hidden fees.

  • Productive: Onboard Wi-Fi, power outlets, and quiet spaces to work or read.

  • Convenient: Stations are centrally located in downtown areas, close to dining, shopping, and entertainment.

With no TSA lines, extra baggage fees, or the stress of highway driving, passenger rail offers a smarter, more enjoyable alternative for both leisure and business travelers.

Scenic and Sustainable Travel Along the Mississippi

The Borealis and Empire Builder routes provide more than just transportation—they offer a scenic journey through some of the Midwest’s most beautiful landscapes. From watching bald eagles soar over the Mississippi River near Red Wing, to enjoying the lake views near Pepin, and passing through red sandstone cliffs near Wisconsin Dells, the experience is unforgettable. And don’t miss Winona, my hometown, where the station is just a short walk from Winona State University and close to St. Mary’s University.

A Safer, More Accessible Option for Seniors

Passenger rail also offers a safe, comfortable alternative for senior travelers. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports a significant rise in fatal crashes involving elderly drivers—a 36% increase for men and 17% for women between 2009 and 2018—largely due to aging demographics and limited travel options outside of driving.

Trains like Borealis provide a safer, easier way for seniors to stay mobile, visit loved ones, and maintain independence. Plus, Amtrak offers discounted fares for seniors, making it an even more appealing choice.

The Future of Midwest Rail is Bright

The success of the Borealis train is a testament to what’s possible when communities, government leaders, and transportation advocates work together. With rising ridership and strong support from the public, we’re more committed than ever to expanding passenger rail across the region.

If you haven't experienced the Borealis yet, now is the perfect time to hop on board. Ride the rails. Enjoy the journey. Discover the Midwest like never before.
